The FBI just announced that they have completed the 100 millionth background check on potential purchasers of firearms.

“As firearm sales continue to sky rocket across the country and the FBI-NICS team celebrates its 100 millionth transaction, the professionalism and outstanding customer service offered by FBI-NICS continues to flourish,” said Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G.Keane of National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry. “A sincere congratulations is due to our friends in law enforcement.”

I always find it humorous when people portray the NRA or associated groups as evil, unrestricted gun rights lobbyists- it’s not like that at all. They believe that our Second Amendment rights are extremely important and, thus, smart laws are necessary to protect it. Only law-abiding citizens should have access to firearms, and there should be laws in place to assure that.

The wishy-washy Republican turned independent (just because New Yorkers don’t recall Democratic mayors fondly) Mike Bloomberg has funded an ad during the Virginia governor’s race which attacks Republican candidate Bob McDonell for his gun rights position.
The ad places the tragedy at Virgina Tech in the forefront of the debate by saying that loopholes in VA gun laws allowed it to occur. Not so fast: Jim Geraghty details its errors here.

Because really. Stop and think. All the evidence shows that smart laws that allow citizens to exercise their right to bear arms lead to drops in crime rates and, most especially, drops in violent crime rates. So really, these gun control activists may have the passion on their side, but certainly not the facts.
