But one of my friends is going as Dennis Rodman and I can’t imagine topping that, so I decided to come up with some mid-semester Carolina Review Awards (sort of like when pundits give out mid-season awards for professional sports).

Facebook Stalker of the Year: Christopher Jones

Enough said.

Arielle Reid Award: Students for a Democratic Society

We don’t know how this SDS story will end legally, but they’ve already given us enough entertainment to merit this, the original and most coveted Carolina Review Award.

Best CRDaily.com comment: Stephen E

That was such a ridiculous flame war (scroll down to the bottom).

Gary Birdsong Award: Justin Crowder

Also known as the Glenn Beck Award and the Most Likely to be Burned in Effigy Award. This award was literally made for Crowder last year.

Best Hair: Not Anthony Dent

Really, you’re just not doing it for me this year. Where is the perfectly defined part? The superfluous straightness? The shininess?

The Like, OMG, We Actually Have a Whole Design Staff This Year Award: Amanda Bastyr, Emily Carr, Beth Lawrence and Sarah Sessoms

Like, OMG, we actually have a whole design staff this year!

Most Likely to Commit a Minor Assault During a Staff Meeting: Rosie Bucherati

That really hurt, scary lady.

Mr. Rogers Award for Excellence in Sweaters: Nash Keune

This one was not my idea.

Most Likely to be at the Vanguard of a Revolution: Christopher Jones and Justin Crowder (tie)

Right now these two are neck-and-neck for this prestigious award. I’m taking wagers on how many medieval swords will be used during that revolution.

Most Likely to get Trapped in an Endless Cycle of Midget Puns: Chelsea Walker

Need I explain?

The Bryan Weynand and Nash Keune Award for Editorial Excellence: Bryan Weynand and Nash Keune

What do you give to the Editors who already have the Order of Charlton Allen, the Gold Star, the Order of Victory, and Hero of Soviet Union awards? You name an award after them. And whom better to receive this award than the inspiring duo of Bryan Weynand and Nash Keune?

As always, send me any additional suggestions.

The Carolina Review is excited to announce the winner of the first ever Arielle Reid Award. This annual award was created in 2009 to honor “a member of the Carolina community who, against his or her own best intentions, accidentally provides a boon for the Carolina Review.” The award is named after Ms. Reid in honor of her Letter-to-the-Editor of the Daily Tar Heel (DTH letter to the editor “Carolina Review’s February issue is offensive garbage,” March 16), which set off a whirlwind of controversy, prompted a set of rebuttals, rebuttals to those rebuttals, and rebuttals to the rebuttals to those rebuttals, and surely increased our readership and presence on campus.

There were many competitive nominees, such as Caroline Johnson, who wrote her own letter to the DTH (DTH letter to the editor “Carolina review jibe not funny, insulting,” April 13) which, though less controversial than Ms. Reid’s letter, provided the CR staff with endless entertainment. But, in the end, we just could not deny the weight of Ms. Reid’s accomplishments. That’s right- Arielle Reid has won the Arielle Reid Award.

We would also like to take this chance to thank the editorial board of the DTH for printing these letters and to encourage the entire Carolina community to enter the running for this coveted prize for 2009-2010. Next year might be your turn to burn the CR editorial staff in effigy or try to get the Review banned as hate speech and win this distinguished honor.

Hello presumed CRDaily fanatics! This week has been a bit tense. First, Caroline Johnson wrote her Letter-to-the-Editor of the DTH about our traditional rainforest joke, which really raised some really intelligent real issues. I know that the substantive and insightful concerns that Ms. Johnson mentioned sent me into an existential spiral of deep contemplation and even meditation (Ms. Johnson has since been formally nominated for the Arielle Reid Award). Then, there was the embarrassing anti-Youths for Western Civilization protest/riot Tuesday, which put us all in the undesirable and awkward position of logically and emotionally siding with the anti-immigration YWC. To top it all off, yesterday was Tax Day (though Tax Day does have a saving grace- it is presumably the day which sees the most voters change their registration to Republican of any day of the year). Because of all this, I have tried to make my column as uplifting as possible.

We have come to realize that we are way behind the times here at the Review. Many, if not most or all clubs at UNC have some committee, project or group devoted to furthering social justice. Even the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship has a Social Justice Committee. So, we would like to announce the formation of our own Social Justice Committee (or the CRSJC). After all, if there’s one thing we do at the Carolina Review, it’s follow whatever everyone else on campus is doing and thinking. That, and continually add new layers of suffocating bureaucratic red tape.

However, we will not be naming any members of our staff to this exciting new committee. We feel that none of the members of the Carolina Review are sensitive, tolerant, or social justicey enough to earn a spot on the Social Justice Committee. Actually, the mere fact that we would base the selection of committee members solely on those points of merit, and not on socio-economic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, height, handedness, eye color, etc. proves that we are all just terribly wrong for the CRSJC.

This new Committee will deal with all matters concerning Social Justice and the Carolina Review. So, if you ever have any concerns about our position on any social justice issue, send it to the CRSJC. The diligent members of this bold new committee will be the chief, and only, staff members in charge of dealing with questions of social justice and redressing any grievances. We hope you are as excited for this new opportunity as we are.

Hello out there in Internetland. This is the very first installment of my new weekly blog column, titled “The Man Who Was Thursday. ” That title (for which I must thank the incomparable Justin Crowder) comes from the title of a novel by G.K. Chesterton, although the only real connection between the book and the column is the fact that this column will be posted every Thursday. I intend for this column to cover, well… just about anything which can be succinctly discussed in ~300-500 words. Of course, all of my commentary will come from a conservative standpoint, although I will certainly not simply write about politics. Thankfully, we live in a free society in which the government is relegated to its own sphere, leaving room for one to ponder issues beyond the increasingly onerous ineptitude of our elected politicians.

I suppose some sort of short biographical introduction is in order. I am one of the Editors of the esteemed Carolina Review. An ex-communist, I am now something of a libertarian conservative (I’m sure I’ll narrate my conversion at some point). I am a big fan of William F. Buckley, Kierkegaard, G.K. Chesterton (of course), and the Austrian School of Economics. As I’m sure my political, philosophical, and aesthetic tastes will become apparent in coming weeks, I’ll stop there.

I would like to devote the remainder of my space to announcing the creation of the Arielle Reid Award. This award is designed to honor a member of the Carolina community who, against his or her own best intentions, accidentally provides a boon for the Carolina Review. Of course, it is named after Ms. Reid in honor of her Letter-to-the-Editor of the Daily Tar Heel (DTH letter to the editor “Carolina Review’s February issue is offensive garbage,” March 16), which set off a whirlwind of controversy, prompted a set of rebuttals, rebuttals to those rebuttals, and rebuttals to the rebuttals to those rebuttals, and will surely increase the readership of our next issue. As of now, Arielle is the front-runner for this year’s award, but by no means has she already won. There is still plenty of time for someone to burn Bryan and me in effigy or to start a movement to ban the Review from campus and steal the coveted prize away from Ms. Reid. The winner of the Arielle Reid award will be announced on the last day of class.
