    Letter submitted to the Tarheel

On October 9, The News and Observer reported a correction
involving Daily Tarheel columnist Domenic Powell.

The N&O said "Guest writer Domenic Powell's Faceoff column on
Page IB on Monday stated erroneously that retired UNC Chapel Hill
Professor Elliot Cramer had called Powell personally a "coward"
and a "fascist;" Instead, Cramer used those terms to characterize
the creators of anonymous campus fliers and protesters who
disrupted a campus speech. Powell was not among them."

This may be the first time that the N&O has had to apologize for
false statements made by a DTH columnist.

After publication of the column, Powell wrote to the N&O saying,

"I am not a member of SDS nor am I one of the anonymous makers of
the flier. I am a known member of the UNC Protester's Defense
Committee, along with Haley Koch, which serves as the central hub
for any YWC-opposition activities since April 14th".

Previously the DTH published an article by Powell "Pause helpful
for calmer analysis", criticizing Youth for Western Civilization
without acknowledging Powell's conflict of interest. This is a
serious ethical lapse on the part of both Powell and the DTH.
The DTH refused to publish a response by me, an adviser to YWC,
saying "you appear to have you facts wrong." The DTH editors
have not deigned to reply to my request for a printed apology.
Given what I perceive to be lax ethical standards, I do not
expect this letter to be published but I submit it for the
    record.
