God Save Europe
I will admit to being quite simply minded. I don’t care who doesn’t like it.
Marx was right: a spectre is haunting Europe. But what’s in a name?
I will refrain from calling the European Union a communist plot, because I apparently don’t know enough to use the word communist in a sentence. In my mind, if a body of elitist politicians get together and write a treaty that resolves to bind half a billion people into ”a citizenship common to nationals of their countries” forcing ”Every person holding the nationality of a Member State” to become ”a citizen of the Union,” that body might as well be a communist motherland. But I give up. Whatever you want to call what I just described, call it that. Whatever it is it sure isn’t roses and aunt Emma’s tennis shoes (thanks, John Wayne).
This is especially true when the European Union is now “RESOLVED to achieve the strengthening and the convergence of [Member States'] economies and to establish an economic and monetary Union.” Especially when the European Union is now “RESOLVED to implement a common foreign and security policy including the progressive framing of a common defence policy.” Nothing scary about that. Nope.
The last signature needed to ratify the Lisbon Treaty was signed last Tuesday by Czech President, Vaclav Klaus. Having put a democratic referendum to only one of its twenty-seven members, the European Union has commanded that there be no more soverignty allowed “Member States”. (WARNING: A Biblical allusion coming up. We at CRdaily realize that I am a Republican — I know, I know! — and, alas! I am one of those crazy white people who clings to religion. So, in any case, do not continue reading this paragraph if you do not wish to read a Biblical allusion made by a registered Republican. REPEAT! do not continue reading this paragraph if you do not wish to read a Biblical allusion made by a registered Republican) The opposite of “let there be light,” I would suggest.
According to the constitution that now governs Europe — oop! — “The Union” (said in a deep, Stalin/Hitler voice), Member States “shall refrain from any action which is contrary to the interests of the Union or likely to impair its effectiveness as a cohesive force in international relations.” Indeed, they shall do so “unreservedly in a spirit of loyalty and mutual solidarity.” Or else, I guess.
But, don’t worry. Everything will be fine. We have to cooperate to fight pressing concerns such as climate change. Because, governments have your best interest at heart! There will be no corruption or scary attempts at power grabs or anything.
I have been listening to Elton John’s “Ticking” over and over for the past half-hour trying to cry. I owe Europe at least that.
“Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.”
