I agreed with Mr Jones’s analysis of the “I want Obama to fail” opinion that is gaining ground amongst some conservatives. I think it should be added that, no, none one wants Obama to fail, it’s just that some of us don’t think what he promotes will work. For all this hype over the “fresh approach” President Obama brings to Washington, he’s just parroting policies that have been promoted by liberals for the past century. Speaking for myself, I sincerely hope that every leader we have succeeds in effecting world peace, economic growth, income inequity, and so forth. Conservatives, however, understand that given numerous examples in history and a basic recognition of human nature and are, therefore, not under any delusions that the policies for which Obama advocates will succeed.
I must respectfully disagree with you and Chris as it seems that the assumptions you are making regarding the conclusions you draw are false.
For example, Chris states that “Those that say they want Obama to be a total failure are putting vindictive party politics over the good of the nation.” The only conservative I hear the media quoting when it comes to this subject is Rush Limbaugh. Not only are they continuously taking him out of context, he phrased his statement in such a way as to get media attention, and it worked like a charm. What Rush means is exactly what you are saying you mean, that he wants his policies to fail. If he had said, “I want Obama to succeed” it’s not as if we would think, oh, he must be refering to America and world peace. He would be refering to his means not his stated ends. Just because Obama’s stated aim is to fix the economy, doesn’t mean he will.
John McCain and Obama are demagauges who do not love liberty. Therefore, if their aim is wto bring about less liberty and more central planning etc., I want them to fail.
I respect both of your opinions, and I hope my position is clear. I do not think we should let the opposition frame the discussion in a manner that puts us on the defensive. Where were all these people 80 days ago when there were movies being made about Bush’s assasination, when F-Bush shirts were flying off the racks, when they refered to Bush as “my president,” when U.S. senators were calling Bush a traitor, when Biden was calling for Bush’s impeachment, and when 51% of Democrats (according to a Fox News Poll) wanted Bush to “Fail” ? They were wanting “my president” to fail. Therefore, they are disengenuous and they can shove it.
